Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks

Driven by cloud adoption, digital services and artificial intelligence (AI), regional demand for data centres is predicted to grow nearly 20% every year through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projections that Southeast Asia’s information centre electricity use will almost double by 2030 compared to 2024– a trend mirrored throughout the larger APAC area.

The APDCA participants include leading international operators, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.

The Arcady @ Boon Keng floor plan

” Balancing power sustainability with the rising request for electronic facilities is among APAC’s defining hurdles,” says Jeremy Deutsch, chair of APDCA. “With the right plan frameworks, Asia-Pacific governments can ensure that electronic transformation advances hand in hand with net-zero ambitions.”

Amongst the examples presented is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– an accreditation plan jointly developed by the Infocomm Media Advancement Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to recognise information centres with strong sustainability functionality and energy-efficient practices.

The Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA) has actually started a new white paper calling for stronger policy and market partnership to boost power sustainability all over data facilities in the area.

Titled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was published on Oct 27 and outlines approaches to decrease the environmental influence of information centers while fulfilling the surging requirement for electronic framework in Asia-Pacific (APAC).

The white paper emphasize best techniques to boost power efficiency throughout the information centre lifecycle– from spot selection, design and building to operations and tracking. It additionally recommends plan steps to speed up accessibility to clean and renewable energy through stronger grid infrastructure and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Developers are motivated to work together carefully with regulatory authorities and industry associates to establish constant energy performance standards throughout the APAC markets.
